Energy metabolism disorder

Children love to go out and play games or do sports with friends. Yet that is not an option for every child. In the Netherlands, every week one or two children are born with an energy metabolism disorder.

Simply put, their batteries are defective. They are half full at the best, they empty quickly and they damage the body with their toxic substances. Patients with the mildest form feel like they have run a marathon after having walked 50 metres. This means that they are often very tired and that they have various phyisical complaints that prevent them from just running outside to play. 50% of these children die before the age of ten.

Treatment

Currently there is no treatment for energy metabolism disorders. These diseases are progressive: causing healh to deteriorate more and more. This is unacceptable to pediatrician professor Jan Smeitink and his team. They have made it their life's work to find a drug to give these children energy again.

Research

For as long as 30 years people have been working on a global research project, trying to find a treatment that can stop, or maybe even cure, the disease. Over the past few years various very important steps have been made towards a major breakthrough in the research process. Thanks to this, Smeitink's research team has made good progress in developing a drug. The knowledge gained is also very important for other diseases such as Parkinson, certain forms of cancer and the normal aging process.

The purpose of the research is to develop the first treatment for energy metabolism disorder within the next five years. Now that the finish is in sight, we want to reach our goal. This will take a lot of money.

Why the Energy4All Foundation?

The goal of Energy4All is to collect money to expand and speed up the research into disorders in energy metabolism.
